Resources for Sex/Drug-Linked Behaviors

What does “sex/drug-linked behaviors” mean?

Sex/Drug-linked behaviors, also known as chemsex, PnP, etc. describes the use of any illicit substance/s just before or during sex. Substances can intensify sexual encounters, increase confidence, and reduce inhibitions. They can also numb the distress associated with things like trauma triggers, HIV-related stigma, internalized ‘-isms’ (i.e., racism, homophobia, biphobia, etc.), and shame.

Are these behaviors a problem?

If this becomes a problem depends on each person and their circumstances. Controlling Chemsex has a free, confidential chemsex self assessment Short version to check if/how much sex/drug-linked behaviors may be negatively impacting you.

How can I prevent this becoming a problem?

Controlling Chemsex also has tips and tools for chemsex harm reduction. Canada’s Gay Men’s Sexual Health Alliance also has safety tips at Tools & Tips - Party and Play. The Chicago Recovery Alliance has also published a Chemsex Toolkit with strategies for staying safe.

What if I need more than self-help resources for support?

I recommend Dr. David Stuart’s youtube channel to clients who struggle with sex/drug-linked behaviors. He recorded a helpful video explaining that referral options depend on your goals (i.e., trauma, sobriety, working through shame, etc.).

By now you’ve probably noticed that the resources out there are overwhelmingly designed by and for men outside of the United States. In truth, every demographic is impacted by sex/drug-linked behaviors. If you’re lucky, you may have a comprehensive program in your area that combines sexual health, trauma, and substance use treatment. However, you can put together your own health care team based on your unique needs.

  • If you want to focus on sexual topics, like sexual health or learning to have sober sex, an AASECT-certified sex therapist may be a good fit.

  • Other goals may include cutting back on use or managing cravings, in which case a substance use counselor can help.

  • If you’re interested in learning more about my own treatment approach for integrating sexual health, trauma, and substance use treatment please schedule an introductory visit with me. I look forward to collaborating together!
